THE SCOTLAND RECORD 1985 - 2011
Scotland, predictably, failed to reach a play-off for UEFA 2012 and the focus turns to BRAZIL 2014 qualifying in five months time, with still only a very faint chance of moving forward under a low-grade manager and a poor technical plan. Recent improvement in Wales is an added worry for that group, which sees us now ranked 5th. Our chance is probably France 2016 (24
teams), after Craig Levein has gone (if they get a top manager) .. but don`t bet on it.

Following the worst team selection seen in a long time for the friendly defeat in Wales ( barring, perhaps, the one his succesor put out in Stockholm), our worst ever manager , George Burley, was shipped out. Later, SFA President George Peat admiited to the media what we had said in `Pyramid News` from day one ... it was a BIG mistake to employ Gordon Smith (ceo) and George Burley. Incredibly, he didn`t mention his own position.... which he left to Rangers-mess-embroiled Campbell Ogilvie in May 2011. Spain won the 2010 World Cup in South Africa .. a great host .. in a rather dire tournament. England lost out to Germany and complained loudly about the Jabulani ball ... still being used widely in many competitions. France disintegrated completely, refusing to train at one point after striker Anelka was sent home ... later banned for 15 matches by the FFF.

George Burley was appointed in a `sham` process criticised by several other (better ?) candidates, following Alex McLeish`s recruitment by Birmingham City. With just eight `championship` games under his belt, McLeish ranked second behind Craig Brown, whose 8-game record was 2 points better with a much better goals difference. Burley also managed eight counting matches and finished bottom of the last seven managers. Spain won the 20008 UEFA Championship in Switzerland and Austria.

Alex McLeish was appointed after Walter Smith was recruited for another spell at Rangers following their short sojourn with Paul Le Guen. At eight championship games, Walter was level with Berti Vogts (4-2-2) with more goals scored, but never got the same bad press as the former German UEFA Championship-winning boss. At eleven games, Walter ranks 2nd of the last eight managers, behind Craig Brown.

Bert Vogts finally caved into a media `winter-of-discontent` and resigned. Despite having a better record than Andy Roxburgh and Jock Stein after nine championship games, the anti-German media plus a goal-not-allowed against Norway in three poor final games sent him on a virtual World tour of managerial positions. Walter Smith took over following a lean spell in England.... and earned praise from the `blue` Scottish media, despite his nine-championship-game record coming out at 17 points, same as Berti. In fact, the final difference between them (p.11) emerged as a late headed goal by Gary Caldwell in a game which had been totally dominated by France at Hampden. Walter didn`t get us a play-off... nor did he take us to those illusive finals. We can`t complain about his record, though.... any more than we could about Berti. It isn`t managers and players who are losing us games..... it is the SFA`s responsibility to ensure the production of sufficient talent and quality.

Much criticism of Berti Vogts and u-21 boss Rainer Bonhof, despite having brought more young pklayers through than any previous boss.... they had to. However, Berti`s competitive record remained quite strong compared to recent Scottish bosses. Greece, under former Werder Bremen boss, Otto Rehhagel, were surprise winners of the Portugal 2004 UEFA Championships in a final which looked sure for the hosts.

Berti Vogts completed two years in the job much criticised by an anti-German media, despite this record being better than Jock Stein`s from 1978-80, producing a 1-0 first leg UEFA Championship play-off lead over Holland, where acute selection problems led to a heavy defeat in Amsterdam Arena. The media even claimed Walter Smith`s selections "played better", despite, after seven matches ,Vogts still lying 2nd in the manager`s competitive table behind Andy Roxburgh. It is one reason you just can`t win in Scotland....

World Cup 2002 in Japan and South Korea was poor with rotten refereeing nobbling the likes of Argentina and Italy. Brazil beat Germany in the final in Ronaldo`s competition. On Sep 20, 2010, the Italy - S.Korea ref, Ecuador`s Bryan Moreno, was arrested at Kennedy Airport with bags of heroin. He disallowed an Italy goal and sent of Totti for zilch. Was he bribed ?

The lengthy reign of Andy Roxburgh and Craig Brown ended with the appointment of Berti Vogts and Rainer Bonhof (u-21) and Scotland facing a massive shortage of experienced quality players, which Berti had to solve by throwing many into tough friendlies. David Weir walked out after being criticised.... and should never have been allowed to return. Since Berti gained a play-off first leg win over Holland with his fresh faces, Scotland have consistently failed by bringing back has-beens .... when we should follow Berti`s path with fresh talent, giving them time and a decent coach.
